Architects provide the backbone of growing cities and suburban expansion. They are hired for multiple purposes. From designing buildings, houses, and analysis of production and cost, they are truly the masterminds of preconstruction. If you want to know what the future holds for you if you decide to become an architect, then this article will focus as a career overview and guide you on your way.

What Is An Architect?

Architects design structures such as buildings, houses, and other such structures. They are tasked with the look and overall result of what is to be constructed. They are also responsible for the safety requirements, economical requirements, and the general functionality of the structure.

What Are The Typical Duties?

Here are some of the typical day-to-day duties of an architect.
  • Architects prepare visual presentations for clients such as sketches, slideshows, and even rough drafts. They also present new ideas and solutions.

  • They analyze the budget and requirements for a given project and ultimately discuss the objectives.

  • They conduct environmental, economic, and feasibility studies for the project.

  • They provide final construction plans such as blueprints along with precise details of the overall work.

  • They are responsible for following the zoning laws, building codes, fire regulations, as well as other ordinances.
What Is The Educational Requirement?

To become an architect, you must earn an education through any of the following architectural program choices such as a 2-year master's degree, a 3 to 4-year master's with other different degrees, or a 5-year bachelor's degree. In the US, earning a professional degree means that you'll have to undertake a period of training such as an internship and then pass the Architect Registration Examination. Most states even require that your school be accredited by the NAAB (National Architectural Accrediting Board).

What is The Yearly Income?

A survey done for the 2008 to 2009 architect salary in the US revealed that the average income was around $77,000. Interns mainly earned around $35,000 to $58,000 and sometimes even beyond these numbers as it depended on how much experience the individual accumulated before acquiring a license. Experienced architects will definitely earn more than the $77,000 range. Interns might reach this level as years pass and experience grows. The average annual earnings for senior architects and partners are estimated to be around the $1,00,000, but some are even slated to earn as high as $2,35,000 with bonuses of nearly $2,00,000.

Employment Statistics

A 2006 survey done in the US stated that about 1,32,000 architects held jobs in the US. Most of these jobs were positioned in architectural firms that held as few as five workers. A small percentage of architects were based in residential and non-residential construction firms. The survey also revealed that another small percentage worked for various government agencies. Self-employed architects were estimated to occupy 25 percent of the number stated above.

What the Future Brings

Architectural employment is foreseen to grow at least twice as fast as the average leading up to the year 2016. The field of architecture is wrought with fierce competition for positions at different prestigious firms. It is predicted that those architects who proceed to set themselves apart (such as being self-employed and successful) will earn lots of highly advantageous opportunities.
