General Responsibilities:

Terracon’s cultural resources management services are part of the Natural / Cultural Resources (NCR) Practice Group, and focus on compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) as well as applicable state and local regulations. The architectural historian position involves desktop / literature reviews, field surveys, and consultation with State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPOs) under Section 106 of the NHPA. The position requires evaluation of historic properties for National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility. Understanding of the regulatory framework for architectural evaluation of standing structures is essential.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.

Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.

Performs site visits, field observations and field data collection or assignments.

Responsible for developing written proposals to clients for approval by senior level professionals.

In addition to project management as an architectural historian, the position may also require project management for National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) reviews.

These reviews may involve desktop research and review of readily available resource documents and surveys that sample, measure, and analyze project sites for the presence of natural and/or cultural resources in connection with potential future site development.

These projects would serve to identify, evaluate, and recommend strategies and project designs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

Tasks may include applicable permit applications and technical document reviews, including proposals, reports, and regulatory agency correspondence.

Projects may include reviews for wetland and Waters of the U.S. determinations / delineations, protected species habitat assessments and surveys (i.e. threatened and endangered species, migratory bird species, bald and golden eagles), cultural resources assessments, and studies and assessments as required by the NEPA and may require consultations with federal agencies, state agencies, tribal groups, municipalities and other stakeholders.

The position may also involve contributions to business development through preparation of proposals and statements of qualifications, presentations to clients, and active engagement in professional networking activities.


A bachelors or graduate degree in architectural history, historic preservation, or a closely related field

1-5 years’ related experience

Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history
