Prepares professional landscaping plans and designs for the development, beautification and rehabilitation of ground areas primarily around public buildings, parks or highways which deal with the full range of work with primary emphasis on the advanced aspects of landscape architecture such as originality of design, multiple-use concepts, and erosion control; participates in and provides technical consultation for the development of landscape plans that are contracted out; and performs other related duties as assigned.
The Landscape Architect V positions are typically of 2 general types:
1. The Landscape Architect who is responsible for developing master landscape development plans for its area(s) of concern such as public buildings, State parks, etc., which deal with advanced aspects of landscape architecture such as those that involve multiple-use concepts.
2. The Landscape Architect responsible for defining goals, and developing, clarifying, evaluating and monitoring master landscape plans on a statewide basis for its area(s) of concern. Work is characterized by participating in and providing technical consultation for the development of landscape plans that are contracted out.
Both types of positions above also develop statewide standards, specifications, and work plans/timetables for landscape projects and review all design plans for capital improvement and maintenance projects affecting facilities under the jurisdiction of these positions.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:
Professional License: Applicants must possess a valid license as a professional Landscape Architect (LA) in the State of Hawaii at the time of application.

Basic Education/Experience: A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in landscape architecture or a closely related field.
Excess work experience as described under the Specialized Experience below, or any other responsible administrative, professional or analytical work experience that provided knowledge, skills and abilities comparable to those acquired in four years of successful study while completing a college or university curriculum leading to a baccalaureate degree in the majors described above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. To be acceptable, the experience must have been of such scope, level and quality as to assure the possession of comparable knowledge, skills and abilities.
Specialized Experience: Three years of progressively responsible professional landscape architectural work experience involving one or a combination of the following:
A. Originate and develop plans, including the production of detailed plans, specifications and justification, for land and/or water area utilization to meet short- and long-term needs;
B. Coordinate and review plans, including architectural engineering and landscaping designs, for integrated development and conformance with landscape architectural principles, administrative policy and standards;
C. Plan and program construction, restoration, rehabilitation or expansion phases of landscaping in consonance with multiple-use concept and correlation with natural environment factors; and
D. Develop and maintain standards for landscape architectural procedures, methods and techniques.
Supervisory Aptitude: Applicants for the Landscape Architect V, Type 1 described above, must possess supervisory aptitude. This requirement will be considered to have been met when there is strong affirmative evidence of the necessary supervisory abilities and/or potential.
Driver's License: A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
Lifting and Carrying: Some positions require the ability to lift and carry loads of varying weights.
The immediate vacancy requires lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted, with or without reasonable accommodation.
