The Department of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley welcomes applications for a postdoctoral scholar to lead a project at the intersection of spatial modeling, urban planning, and computer science. The Department of Architecture seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar employee, in the area of Architecture, City Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, or in a closely related field, at 100% time. The candidate will perform work under the supervision of Professor Nicholas de Monchaux.

Appointment Length:

This is a full-time, one-year position with the possibility of working remotely possible for all or part of this period. The appointment is renewable for a second year depending on availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

Anticipated start date is Fall 2018.


The Postdoc will explore the creation of novel technological interfaces to intersect spatial modeling and mapping and urban and architectural design. Through the project, we will develop methods and software to bridge spatial modeling and design, we will produce case studies to test out our novel methods, and produce articles and publications documenting our processes, and their pragmatic impact in the field. The postdoc will lead the background research and literature reviews of current computational methods at the intersection of design and spatial modeling, as well as the creation of software and case studies with the software. In terms of methodological and software development, the successful applicant will be in charge of the continuous development of a geospatial processing web application, the improvement and development of the backend and frontend architecture, and the maintenance and development of the cloud infrastructure. The software development involves the development of a geospatial analysis web application. The application has been developed in Node.js on the server-side, React/Redux on the frontend, and PostgreSQL/PostGIS as a database. The postdoc will be in charge of backend development, algorithmic optimization of the application, development of the frontend framework, creation of unit-tests, and the maintenance of the cloud infrastructure. Additionally, the successful applicant will be able to manage and guide undergraduate and graduate research assistants.

Basic Qualifications:

* The completion of all PhD degree requirements except the dissertation at the time of application.

Additional Qualifications (by start date):

* Must have a PhD or equivalent degree in Architecture, City Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, or other closely related discipline.

* The capacity to lead the production of scholarly research.

* Demonstrated skills in React/Redux and Cloud Infrastructure (AWS).

* Familiarity with front-end development (CSS, HTML), SQL, in particular PostgreSQL/PostGIS.

Preferred Qualifications:

* 2-3 years experience in full stack web development and spatial data management.

* 1-2 years experience of developing spatial web applications.

* Demonstrated fluency in Javascript for backend and frontend, Node.js on the server.


The full-time annual salary will be based on qualifications but no less than $60,000 and no more than $75,000.
