Although just about everyone knows that architects design houses and other structures, you may not know a lot about what goes into an architect�s life on a day-to-day basis and what kind of training you need to get to the job that you are after. Being an architect means designing interesting spaces and seeing the work that you have envisioned taking form before your eyes. The role of being an architect is definitely something that many people strive for, but do you have what it takes to get ahead? What options are available to you, and what kind of work will you be doing?

The first thing that you should be aware of is how much time and effort it takes to become an architect. The first thing that you are going to need is a degree in architecture. Architecture degrees usually mean at least a master's degree, if not a PhD, and the course work is known to be extremely tiring and difficult. Some of the courses that you are going to need to take a look at include architectural theory, building design, sciences, and math. After that, you will discover that an internship is something that you need to consider. An internship at a prestigious architecture firm is something that you will discover to be extremely useful, if not vital. A good internship will tell you a lot about the field that you need to work on. Finally, there is a licensing exam that you need to pass. At some point in the future, even after getting licensed, you may discover that you need to take refresher courses.

What does it take to be an architect? There are definitely some people who are very suited towards this field and the work that it entails. An architect needs to be someone who is very on top of things; being detail oriented is vital. Take some time and make sure that you consider what your own organizational skills are like. Are you someone who will consistently work until everything lines up, and do you have a good memory? Being someone who is very driven by logic and order is essential to this job. Also, remember that art classes and a certain amount of creativity are essential as well. You need to be able to communicate through speech and through writing, and you should have a high level of proficiency when it comes to computer usage.



As of 2006, the middle half of all architects earned between $50,000 and $83,000 a year. Most of the jobs that are held by architects are held in small architectural firms, though about 20 percent of architects are self-employed, meaning that they practiced as partners of the firm that they work with or on their own. There are also many governmental positions that are available when you are looking at this job.
