German architectural firm J. Mayer H. is creating The Parasol Metropol of the Incarnation for the citizens of Seville, Spain, a redevelopment project that is further proof of the progressive nature of contemporary European architecture. Blending its cultural past with a futuristic theme, the Metropol is certain to become a dining, lounging, and entertaining destination ideal for locals and tourists.

The Metropol will have a fluid form, as it will be composed of mushroom-like structures connected nebulously like, as its name suggests, a parasol. Beneath this giant, innovative sun blocker will be an ancient Roman archeological site, a plaza, and bars and restaurants. A terrace atop the parasols will offer a scenic stroll for the public.

The six parasols are being built with concrete and wood coating and will stand right in the center of Seville. The land being used for this effort had been abandoned for 31 years. The ground was being dug up for a parking lot before evidence of Roman remains was discovered. It was decided that the archeological site should be preserved and included in the construction. The museum for this discovery will lie at the lower level, while a market and seating area will occupy the surface level. A restaurant and skywalk will be located above.

The timber wood and polyurethane coating, combined with natural materials and standard craftsmanship, will make the structure climate sensitive, requiring little air-conditioning, and provide comfort for the public in an environmentally conscious manner. The wood coating cleans itself and only requires refreshing every 25 years. Since the structure requires little maintenance and is virtually weatherproof, it won’t result in frequent socially obstructive renovations.

In order to honor the identity of Seville, J. Mayer H. has led forums and symposiums to let the public pontificate regarding their concerns about the parasol project. The idea is to connect the cultural and commercial core of southern Seville to the less-affluent area north of El Plaza de la Encarnacion for a renewed point of interest for all of the city and its neighboring townships.

Love it or hate it, the Parasol Metropol of the Incarnation will have you singing “figaro!” It is scheduled to be inaugurated in November 2007.
