Located one hundred miles from San Diego, California State Polytechnic University College of Environmental Design is situated in Pomona. This state university offers a number of degree programs in architecture, including a Bachelor of Architecture degree and the popular Master of Architecture I and Master of Architecture II.

The college currently enrolls about 1,700 students and has fewer than one hundred full time professors, many of who are prominent architects in their own rights. The college offers students a choice between programs in architecture, landscape architecture, as well as urban and regional planning. All of these programs are ranked nationally in the top 25 degree programs in their respective fields.

The Following is a brief description of the degree programs offered by the college:



Bachelor of Architecture:
This degree program is one of the most competitive in the country today and foreign students and non-California residents are not currently eligible to apply. The program is fully accredited by the National Architecture Accrediting Board and it is considered one of the top architecture programs in the nation. The program has a strong focus on design and is quite rigorous. The dedicated student can complete the program in five years. Just a few of the classes students are required to complete include: introduction to architectural design, environmental controls, structures, foundations for design, and history of architecture from 1750 to present day. All students are also required to complete approved internships with registered architects.

Master of Architecture I:
This graduate program was created specifically for those students with undergraduate degrees in fields other than architecture. For applicants to be accepted into this highly competitive program they must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 as well as an impressive portfolio of their work. Students who have not completed an undergraduate degree in architecture will be required to take two years of prerequisite courses. Just a few of the classes students are expected to complete include: renaissance and baroque architecture, building construction and architectural practice, social responsibility in architecture, and introduction to architectural design. The student must also complete a master's thesis in order to earn the degree.


Master of Architecture II:
This program was designed for accomplished students who have already earned their bachelor's degrees in architecture. All candidates must possess a grade point average of at least 3.0 and will be expected to submit portfolios of their work. Just a few of the classes student are asked to complete include: introduction to CAD in architecture, environmental controls, behavioral factors in architecture, and architectural practice. The student must also submit a master's thesis project and must complete 60 units of academic work.


Additional Facts about California State Polytechnic University at Pomona

This is a public university with a current enrollment of a little over twenty thousand students. It is one of only six polytechnic universities in the nation today. Only a small number of students commute to school, most live on campus. The average yearly cost including room and board is about eight thousand five hundred dollars. As we mentioned earlier, the school does not accept out of state applicants. It also does not accept foreign students.

Other California colleges with highly rated architecture degree programs include: New School of Architecture & Design, Westwood College, Penn Foster College, the Art Institutes, and Ashworth College.
